Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account?

No. Motum doesn't have user accounts. There's nothing to sign up for, no email to enter, and no password to remember. On first launch the app creates an anonymous identifier in the background so we can attach crash reports to a device — but it's never linked to a name, email, or anything else identifying.

Where is my workout data stored?

On your device. Activities, routes, splits, and statistics live in Motum's local database. They're not uploaded to a server. If you also grant Apple Health access, completed workouts are also saved to Health alongside everything else in your activity log.

What does Motum collect about me?

An anonymous installation identifier, crash reports, and basic analytics events (which screens you visit, how long sessions are). No name, no email, no contact info, no precise location data, no health data. See the Privacy Policy for the full list.

How do I delete all my data?

Open Settings inside the app and scroll to the bottom. Tap Delete All Data. This permanently deletes every activity, all settings, and your anonymous identifier from this device. The app returns to the welcome screen as if it were just installed.

Does Motum cost money?

No. Motum is free with every feature available to everyone. There's an optional tip jar in Settings if you'd like to support development — three one-time tip tiers, no subscriptions. Tips are processed by Apple through the App Store and are entirely optional.

Which iOS and watchOS versions does it support?

iOS 17 and watchOS 10 or later. For the best experience, keep your devices on the latest OS version.

Does Motum work without internet?

Yes. GPS tracking, recording, statistics, and Apple Health integration all work offline. The only things that need a network connection are sending crash reports back to us (which queue up and send when you're online again) and any future App Store transactions.

Why does Motum ask for background location?

So we can keep recording your route when your screen turns off mid-workout. Without background location, the moment your phone goes to sleep, GPS stops and your activity ends up with a broken trace. Background access is requested only after you've already used Motum for a bit — never up-front.

How do I create a route to follow with ClimbPro?

Motum can follow any standard GPX route file — attach one via Load route on the dashboard before a ride. You can create GPX routes for free with the online editor gpx.studio; we wrote a step-by-step guide.

Can I sync my workouts between devices?

Not directly between iPhones — because there are no user accounts, there's no cloud sync. But the iPhone and Apple Watch versions of Motum sync to each other locally over Bluetooth, and if you save workouts to Apple Health, those are synced across your devices via iCloud (handled by Apple, not us).

How do I refund a tip?

Tip purchases are handled by Apple through the App Store. To request a refund, visit reportaproblem.apple.com and select the Motum transaction.
